Faces of PETRONAS: Part 2

Who would have thought that we are going to have two Projek Tekad representatives in the PETRONAS 50th Merdeka Commemorative Website: Faces of PETRONAS? You have seen Coach Remy in the previous post, and now it's none other than our reigning Queen of Projek Tekad, Coach Aizan.

Let's get up close and personal with Coach Aizan. You may notice the quotation that she uses as her affirmation, Be Queen by Oprah Winfrey had been published in Tekad Blog before in the Inspire segment.

Aizan Azrina Rosli

Designation: Legal Counsel, Oil Business
HCU / OPU / Country Office: Legal and Corporate Affairs Division
Location: Level 68, Tower 1, PeTT

“Be a queen. Dare to be different. Be a pioneer. Be a leader. Be the kind of
woman who in the face of adversity will continue to embrace life and walk
fearlessly toward the challenge. Be a queen!”

Legal Counsel Aizan Azrina Bt Rosli is a classic example of a woman who has taken charge of her destiny and become a ‘queen’. She may be petite, but there’s a backbone of steel wrapped in all that velvet that has shown through during her nine years here at PETRONAS.

An engineer with Petroleum Management Unit (PMU), nominator Azlan Bin Ali agrees. “She has this tremendous passion for work and life and she’s not afraid to go after what she wants,” he says. “At the same time, she truly cares about the development of others, both professionally and personally. She is always there to offer a helping hand.”

From 2002 to 2006, Aizan was involved with promoting Intellectual Property (IP), the protection of PETRONAS’ intangible assets throughout the PETRONAS Group through talks and awareness programmes to various Operating Units (OPU). She has also played a pivotal role in advocating PETRONAS to the world as an organisation that is serious about IP Management, networking with IP experts, IP groups and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

Aizan was also a member of Licensing Executives Society International (LESI), an international society of IP practitioners. “In 2001 to 2002, I held the post of Vice President of the Malaysian Chapter,” she says. “And in 2002 to 2003 I was voted as the President. It wasn’t until I was at the world meeting of Presidents from various country chapters that I realised that at 28, I was the youngest President in the world! The other Presidents were in either their forties or fifties. I managed to overcome the gap in knowledge and experience by gaining a mentor from Germany,” she adds brightly. “His name is Dr. Heinz. He taught me a lot and we remain good friends till this day.”

Her biggest challenge? “I recently had to negotiate a deal with some Japanese counterparts,” she says. “The lawyer negotiating against me was one of the top lawyers in his field with about 35 years of age difference, wisdom and experience. Negotiations were tough and I had to resort to various methods to finally clinch the deal. Gaining his respect was a big challenge, but looking back, I realise that it was a real learning experience for me.”

Aizan has also spearheaded Project Tekad, a community outreach programme organised by young professionals aiming to help underprivileged ‘champions’ to succeed in life, which garnered her a NSTP-PwC (New Straits Times Press-PricewaterhouseCoopers) humanitarian award. She hopes that this effort, along with many other community outreach programmes, will help to guide the future generation into becoming better individuals and leaders.
