Faces of PETRONAS

In conjunction with Malaysia's 5oth Independence Day, PETRONAS has launched its 50th Merdeka Commemorative Website for its staff. In one of the segments called "Faces of PETRONAS", Projek Tekad's very own Coach Remy (Projek Tekad Pahang) is featured as one of the many faces that have left a foot print of significant contribution, be it to the company or to the community as a whole.

Read on, and you would never have guessed that behind his humble smile is a person who has the passion and determination to seize every chance he gets to give back to the community.

Remy Azrai Mohd Amin

Designation: Researcher, Subsurface Technology
HCU / OPU / Country Office: PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd
Location: Bangi

For someone who claims to have been trained as a farmer, 25 year-old Remy Azrai has certainly come a long way. A Subsurface Technology Researcher with PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd (PRSB), Remy has had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout his two-year career with PETRONAS, going to exotic locations such as Vietnam, Bangkok and Perth. Yet, his trip to the Netherlands earlier this year would have to be his crowning achievement.

“He represented PRSB and PETRONAS at the 7th European Formation Damage Conference, in Scheveningen, Netherlands in May 2007,” writes nominee Siti Aminah bt Musa, a Petroleum Economist at PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd. “He and his colleague won the Young Professional Contest (YPC) for their paper on Production Profile of Wells Before & After Treatment using the Novel Thermo-Chemical Technique,” she reports.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Remy recalls of their win with an ear-splitting grin. “We were the youngest there, and we won! We were trying very hard not to jump for joy. It was such an amazing experience.” Remy and his colleague, Kamal Rosli had presented a paper on the technology that they had developed with their team under the Solid Deposition Project trademark, which has helped to increase the average yield of all oil wells to up to 50 barrels per day depending on the well. “I had a great team during the execution of this project,” Remy says. “My team leader Mr Jamil Jelani, was also really supportive about the YPC.”

A PETRONAS scholar, Remy says he owes much to the Corporation. “I’ve been given so much,” Remy says. “from the opportunity to pursue a higher education, to gaining experiences that will last me a lifetime. I have been able to travel and see the world as well as have the chance to make something of myself.”

Remy also adds that in keeping with the PETRONAS Brand Essence of ‘Energy Receive, Energy Return, Aspiring People Everywhere’, he aims to give back to the community. “I’ve had my chance,” he says. “Now it’s my turn to offer that chance to someone else that needs it.”

In 2006, he became actively involved in ‘Project Tekad’, a project that aims to inspire and nurture underprivileged students into excelling in all that they do. Although it is not exclusively a PETRONAS effort, many young PETRONAS professionals have joined this programme, which creates a platform for sharing and communicating with children.

“We want the children to be able to handle whatever comes their way,” Remy says earnestly. “We’re taking on the role of big brothers and sisters to motivate them, to help instill confidence and a sense of purpose in them. We want them to have a bright future and become Champions. But most of all, we want them to have a chance, like we did.”
